Oral Cancer Screenings

Early symptoms of oral cancer, such as a sore that lingers, a patch of discoloration, or a lump, are often subtle and painless at first.

Routine screenings give our team a chance to spot concerns early, when treatment is more straightforward and outcomes are often more positive.

What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?

An oral cancer screening is a simple exam that helps us look closely at the health of your mouth, lips, tongue, and throat. During your appointment, your dentist examines the soft tissues, checks the sides and underside of the tongue, and feels along your jaw and neck for any unusual changes.

We may also use an ultraviolet light or similar device to highlight areas that aren’t always visible under regular lighting.

Why Are Oral Cancer Screenings Important?

Advances in modern dentistry allow us to identify small concerns before they develop into major issues. For patients who smoke, frequently drink alcohol, or have other risk factors, these screenings offer an essential layer of protection.

Even if you’re not high-risk, consistent monitoring helps ensure that nothing goes unnoticed.

Does the Screening Hurt?

Not at all! The process is fast, noninvasive, and completely comfortable. Most patients barely notice it’s happening.

What Signs Should You Watch for at Home?

If you spot any of the following, let us know:

  • A sore that isn’t healing
  • A lump or thickened area
  • Red or white patches
  • Changes in the way your dentures fit
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Persistent hoarseness
